Shawn King, Criminal Defense Counsel, Stuffco Law

"Social Media in the Digital Age:  Finding Evidence and Protecting Your Own Information"

Shawn’s legal practice is solely focused on criminal defence. Shawn graduated from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law in 2010. While in law school, Shawn received various awards for academic achievement, such as the C McGoey award for academic achievement and participation in the area of criminal law and the Coughlan Moot award for advocacy in the area of criminal law. Shawn also volunteered extensively with Student Legal Services of Edmonton in the Criminal Law Project and served as a Day Leader with Student Legal Services.

Shawn has focused his criminal law practice primarily in Edmonton, Stony Plain, Sherwood Park, and Fort McMurray. However, he travels throughout Northern Alberta to wherever a client may need him. Originally from Prince Edward Island, Shawn’s familiarity with all four Atlantic Provinces has allowed him to communicate to the courts, on behalf of clients, the Atlantic Canadian culture and the specific challenges faced by Maritimers and Newfoundlanders working and residing in Alberta. Frequently, creative strategies have been employed by Shawn to ensure favourable results for rural Albertan and Atlantic Canadian clients. Shawn’s area of practice ranges from impaired driving, assaults, and minor thefts to drug trafficking and serious sexual assault trials.

Besides having a general practice of criminal defence, Shawn has a relatively unique area of practice in technology related crimes. Before becoming a lawyer, Shawn spent a number of years in the Information Technology sector, working for numerous large telecommunications companies, eventually coming to Edmonton to work for IBM. Shawn’s technology background has given him expertise into the workings of web and social media (such as Facebook and Instagram), email, instant messaging, internet networking, text messaging, cellular telephones and smartphones (hardware, software and cellular tower networks), GPS, image manipulation and reconstruction and many other forms of consumer and industrial technology. In the information age, there is more information about each of us through our phones and social media that is easily accessible on the internet.. This is especially so for young people as social media and smartphones become more popular. Police are learning to use these technologies more and more to gather evidence against an accused person, even to locate the person through cell phone use. Shawn has built a network of forensic analysts, IT architects, and telecommunications experts to help successfully defend his clients and combat police manipulation of digital information.

Shawn is happy to discuss your legal matters with you, even if it is simply to provide answers to legal information questions.
